I have seen recent reference to AC fuel/vacuum pump casting numbers which may be model numbers but are not referenced in any M38 or M38A1 ORD7/8/9 parts books. A review of Ord7/8/9 books reveals many various pumps for M38 and A1: at least 11 by specific part number! So I went through my stock of pumps: the following casting numbers show up on the mounting flange: No hand primer: 9917. With hand primer: 4260, 4260JJ, 4069, 4535, 9810 and 9997. Is there a chart related this apparent AC casting number to the various numbers as they appear in the parts books? ......... Brian

Hello Brian,

The AC fuel pump numbers on the flange are the last 4 digits only of their full AC number in the ORD 9. Don't ask me why AC did it that way.

As for a chart. Here is a beginning for one:

No hand primer:
9917 = 1539917 Pg 72 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8330132
9585 = 1539585 Pg 72 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 7375380 {This pump is also listed TM 9-2320-208-20P (M38A1 Org Maint Parts List as FSN 2910-547-7769 ORD# 8720569)}
2659 = 5592659 Pg 73 of M38 ORD 9 ORD#
2147 = 5592147 Pg 73 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8329527
With hand primer:
2655 = 5592655 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8332073
3209 = 5593209 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8333104
3249 = 5593249 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8720569
4260 = 5594260 Pg 83 of M38A1 ORD 9 ORD# 8720570
4260JJ I think the JJ is a mod level or alteration stamp on a basic 4260
4069 = 5594069 Pg 82 of M38A1 ORD 9 ORD# 8720569
4535
9810 = 1539810 Pg 82 of M38A1 ORD 9 ORD# 8329705
9997

I would guess 4535 & 9997 were produced by AC after the last IPL which would have been after 1966.

Hello Keith,
The original factory pump by the ORD 9 SNL G758 1956 is:

AC# 1539810 WO# 805727 ORD# 8329705

The supersedures are:

AC# 5594069 WO# 810289 ORD# Unk

AC# 5594260 WO# 908715 ORD# 8720570

The M38A1 ORD 8 SNL G758 1959 and 1966 list one service pump:

AC# Unk? WO# Unk? ORD# 8720569 FSN 2910-547-7769

____________________________________________________________

The M38 ORD 9 SNL G740 1955 lists the original M38 pump:

AC# 1539585 WO# 800350 7375380 For engines thru sn MC74419

AC# 1539917 WO# 807641 ORD# 8330132 For engines after sn MC74419

Then these service replacements are listed:

AC# 5592147 WO# 119483 ORD# Unk For engines thru sn MC74419

AC# 5592659 WO#120208 ORD# 8329527 For engines after sn MC74419

The M38 ORD 8 SNL G740 1956 lists 6 pumps (no 's):

AC# 1539585 ORD# 7375380 WO#Unk? WEU G758-8720569

AC# 5592147 ORD# 8329527 WO#Unk? WEU G758-8720569

AC# 1539917 ORD# 8330132 WO#Unk? WEU G758-8720569

AC# 5593209 ORD# 8333104 WO#Unk? WEU G758-8720569

AC# UNK ORD# 8720569 WO# 120933

_____________________________________________________________

Based on the available data I am confident any of the above pumps will work on the M38 and M38A1. As for which is correct I would assume the first pump shown in each model's ORD 9 would most likely be the factory original. That is if you don't have any more definitive factory data that you can research.

There are a few civvy dual pumps that will work but use tube nipples instead od threaded tubing and pipe openings.

Thanks so much for clearing up the casting numbers. I wouldn't qualify to work at Bletchley Park having missed that fairly obvious code.

The one oddity in the bunch is this one:

9585 = 1539585 Pg 72 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 7375380 {This pump is also listed TM 9-2320-208-20P (M38A1 Org Maint Parts List as FSN 2910-547-7769 ORD# 8720569)}

It is listed in the 66 edition of TM 9-2320-208-20P for the M38A1 as a cross reference for the later FSN & ORD#.
