Just an update. I ordered, received, and installed a pair of the 1093K1 relief fittings from McMaster-Carr. When they wouldn't thread in all the way down (2-3 threads still visible when seated) I re-checked the description in the ORD9 and noted the word "short" in the description (no height dimension given). I assume this means the original ORD9 fitting is shorter than the 1/2-inch dimension shown in the McMaster-Carr and other catalogs. I haven't so far been able to locate a "short" version. Other than that it works as intended.

Remember they are 1/8" pipe threads which can be found
in straight, but usually are tapered.

The reason I mention this is you can't cut off a portion of
tapered male fitting and have it thread up like you
would expect. If you are able to get it to start it will
make up faster and stop sooner.

Let's not confuse this issue. 1/8" pipe threads are tapered period.

There is a short and a long but both are tapered and both will thread into any 1/8" pipe threaded hole.

This is what the thread is shaped as.

These are the tapered pipe thread dimensions

Screwing straight threaded parts into tapered pipe threaded holes is a common novice error.

Hi Wes,
Thanks for the thread info. Close nipples have straight threads once
you get past the taper.

The purpose of my post was to keep someone from just cutting
off the end of the longer fitting and expecting it to work.

From reading this and other posts about greasing the rear axle bearings, I didn't want to take a chance that my relief fittings were seized and simply took them out before I greased. Once I seen fresh grease come out of the hole I put them back in. Turns out they weren't seized afterall. I'm still amazed at how such a seemingly simple task like greasing a vehicle can have bad results. Great thread!

Southpw and RonD2,
I read your posts reference the pressure relief valve on your rear axle housings. Mine still has the grease zert and the pressure relief valve. (The axles seals leak too) In any case I was wondering what you did with your pressure relief valve . RonD2 had located at 5psi relief valve at Fastenal. Did you use it and how has it worked. I try to be careful when I grease and am thinking of leaving the grease zert and just replacing the 65 year old relief valve.
Any additional wisdom you guys have gained will be appreciated.

I have left mine open. I will likely just keep it like that and if I find too mich grease comes out, then I will worry about it then. So far I'm still in the building stage and have this thread to fall back on whwn needed

Brad,
Thanks for the reply I'm in the rebuilding process also. I'm trying to cram the rebuilding into 5 or 6 years.

This is my first ever jeep so I don't have much in the wisdom department yet --- still soaking it up in this forum.

As for the relief fittings, I haven't pulled my hubs yet to look at the brake shoes and seals. Have been on the other end getting ready to fire the motor.
