Just like the L134 the F134 castings were used in both civilian and military applications. The only way to determine what application a L134 or F134 was originally shipped from the factory in is the serial number of the block. All M38A1.M38A1C/M38A1D/M170 applications had serial number prefixes beginning with MDXXXXX for engines that left in one of those chassis or RMDXXXXX for brand new factory spare engines ordered by the military contract system.

Two F134 castings were used from 1952 thru 68 for the M38A1 series and civilian jeep products: 646228 1952/53 and 807695 54 & up.

Those with 4JXXXXX serials were civvy units.

This is the only place you will find with a positive indication of what application any L134 or F134 was used in from 1947 through 1971.

This is a M38A1 series engine since the serial starts with MD.

4J = civilian engine. Bolting the 24 volt electrics to a civilian engine does not make it an M38A1 engine. The 24 volt electrics will bolt up to any of the civilian F134's. No MD or RMD prefix on the serial means not an original M38A1 engine.
