this discussion started under the Auction section but I thought it would be better if it was brought over to the Technical section.

Wes,

IIRC you said that there was a MWO to remove the priming lever. If so, can you post a copy of it? I picked up a used M38A1 fuel pump today and it has a brass plug where the priming lever normally goes. Since MM is now reproducing the lever I think I'll try to install one when I rebuild this pump and I'd like to know more about that change.

FWIW so far, the only number that I've found on the pump is a lightly stamped "4069" on the flange that bolts up to the engine. I've heard that these lightly stamped numbers are some kind of date code and that the model number is a much heavier stamped or cast in number. All I know for sure is that I have never found a pump model number that matched one of these lightly stamped numbers.

There was an MWO to remove the dash mounted primer pump. Not sure what IIRC you are referring to that has anything to do with hand priming lever on the fuel pump.

4069 is the last four of the AC part number for that pump.

Here's a list I posted several years back.

Quote:

Hello Brian,

The AC fuel pump numbers on the flange are the last 4 digits only of their full AC number in the ORD 9. Don't ask me why AC did it that way.

As for a chart. Here is a beginning for one:

No hand primer:
9917 = 1539917 Pg 72 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8330132
9585 = 1539585 Pg 72 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 7375380 {This pump is also listed TM 9-2320-208-20P (M38A1 Org Maint Parts List as FSN 2910-547-7769 ORD# 8720569)}
2659 = 5592659 Pg 73 of M38 ORD 9 ORD#
2147 = 5592147 Pg 73 of M38 ORD 9 and pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8329527
With hand primer:
2655 = 5592655 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8332073
3209 = 5593209 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8333104
3249 = 5593249 Pg 29 of M38 ORD 8 ORD# 8720569
4260 = 5594260 Pg 83 of M38A1 ORD 9
4260JJ I think the JJ is a mod level or alteration stamp on a basic 4260
4069 = 5594069 Pg 82 of M38A1 ORD 9
4535
9810 = 1539810 Pg 82 of M38A1 ORD 9
9997

Thanks for pointing out those numbers and the list, Wes! That makes things clearer. I'd only found one PN (8720570 ) for the pump in picture 3-2 and hadn't seen the ones buried on page 82 and 83. Do you know if there's anything that describes the differences in the various pumps? The bottom of page 82 and the top pf page 83 list three different pump part numbers

Also in picture 03-4 Part D is a clip that goes under the vent adapter next to the priming lever. Can you tell me it's purpose? Parts A, B, and C are just simple adapters aren't they? Part C is sheered off in my pump. I'm going to try to get the broken remains out today.

If you get into all the manuals that have anything to do with the AC fuel pumps in Willys jeeps you will then come away with the list I posted above.
The three ORD Supply Manuals for each model jeep: ORD 7/8/9 for the the M38 G740 and the M38A1/M170 G758 to start with. Then TM 9-2320-208-20P and -34P for the M38A1/M170. Then TM 9-804, TM 9-8012, TM 9-1804A for the M38, and TM 9-804A, TM9-8014, TM 9-8015-1 for the m38A1/M170. Then the AC Fuel pump service manual TM 9-1828A. And finally all the published MWO's, TB's TB ORD's and manual changes.

The clip retains the lever.

Wes,

Now that I know that the complete part number was 5594069 I went searching for that and I found this http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_Board/ar/t2810.htm. In it, you and several other people listed some other part numbers for AC fuel pumps used in the jeeps. I think I saw at least five PNs that aren't on the list that you posted above. You might want to add them to the list. since, even though they're not original to the M38/A1, I'm sure that owners are likely to encounter them.

It wouldn't hurt to make the complete list a Sticky!

FWIW I got my 4069 pump cleaned up today and got the broken fitting out with surprisingly little trouble. THEN I found that the pump had been dropped and the top cover is bent and the top portion of the FP body is bent and cracked! Sad

I prefer to keep my list specific to the M38/M38A1/M170 military jeeps. Those other civvy pump numbers are easily found in the CJ parts list which I have already researched. Those civvy pumps mentioned in that post are primarily double action pumps topped with the glass filter bowl. None were used on our military M series Willys jeeps. Another problem with field research of these pumps is that most rebuilders took in cores and then mix & matched components over the last half century leading to a lot of identification errors.
