Anyone have an idea as to how to determine long lost USMC number for my M38? Here's what I know:

- unquestionably a Marine Corps vehicle. I sanded off the number after I bought it from KY Division of Surplus Property in 1971. The vehicle was forest green when purchased.
-The bill of sale has an id no. of USA#20899576 which I also saw when sanding off the winter green and before I hit the olive drab.
-Serial number 32155.(bill of sale and data plate)
-Model year 1951(bill of sale and data plate)
-Delivery date 9-51 (data plate)

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Hello Bill,

With the Marine Corps the military step child they often were forced to accept hand me downs for equipment. The M38 was probably surplused by the Army and the marine picked it up from DRMO before it went on to the civvy market.

The only USMC hood number in my M38 data base is 175411 on MC29749.

Here's a photo I found with google of what looks like an original USMC unit.

Thanks for the photo. I've sent a pm to Rchlovn after reading an old discussion between you and he back in 2010. Seems he has a couple of USMC M38s and he was researching the same topic. I'm sure I can just pick a number but would like to be at least in the ball park. Wished I had had the good sense to record the real number when I was young and stupid. Oh well. It's a fun project. I hope to make my 65 vette jealous when I finish the M38.
