What was the Willys spec for the gauge of the
battery boxes? Recent drawings here on the site
show 16 gauge, but the used and blasted box I
have seems much thinner. Understand blasting
will thin it, but it appears uniformly thinner.

18 gauge like everything else?
Tks,

Try to avoid words like "seems" and instead use words like "Measured 0.0478" which would then indicate the metal was actually 18 gauge steel.

Mic it and know for sure what it is. 16 Gauge will mic at 0.0598.

I'll go dig up my mike Wes.

I said seems as I have a four foot plate of 16 gauge that is much thicker
than the battery box. A local metal monger gave me that drop thinking it
was 18 gauge, but after one patch on the side of the jeep it's apparent its
thicker than 18 gauge.

It didn't make sense to patch the box with something that would
look off.

It's best to patch with the same gage metal as originally used even if corrosion has made what is left thinner.

Yes, that makes sense to me too.

.533-535

The sheet miked out about the same.

The edge left from shearing makes it difficult to get a god reading.

Given your chart I'll get some emery cloth and try again in the morning.

I was asking about the thickness of the battery box you have. Also are you talking main cowl box or underhood box?

The cowl box I got from you Wes. I also checked the lower horizontal
sheet metal of the hood near the slave receptacle cutout.

All were very close to one another. Maybe it's the heat. 🙄

I will take a closer look in the daylight with the mic.

That patch we installed on the tub just looks thicker than the tub
sheet which made me assume it was. It also could be a myriad of
other things, like not getting the patch flush, or Bubba working over
the tub with a grinder.

Midwest Military makes both the cowl and under hood boxes and all related pieces.

Yes Sir, you do.
Unfortunately I have to spread my funds where they'll go furthest.
I'll repair this box, but will be calling about a couple of other pieces.

You do make the spare reinforcement bracket that is welded inside
the tub, right?

So if I'm reading this Starrett right the box is .0494 to .0499 depending
on the location.

The sheet measures .055 to .0562 again depending on location.

Sounds like I need to go scrounge some 18 gauge.

Btw, for those not having done it learning to read a ten-thousands
mic is a trick. I still haven't mastered location the proper intersecting
lines so I resorted to counting thousands as I rolled out the thimble.

Thanks for the encouragement to go get that little box. I haven't even
opened it since I bought it at a garage sale a few years ago.
