My '52 M38A1 has the holes behind the door openings top of tub, for the vertical rod that the door latch closes on. Flat fender M38's have a socket that has a bottom that supports this vertical rod. The M38A1 doesn't and looks to have never had this same socket for the bottom of the rod. How is the vertical rod held in the upper "P" clamp with hole? Is the rod drilled and pinned for a flat washer? I cannot find a photo anywhere. I see nothing in the downloads section. I have the rest of the fittings to mount the doors figured out. Signed, No Got Doors yet! John

Hi John,
I think Rick had a recent post where he welded a collar on the rod that sits on
the tub and keeps it from going down.

Take care,

Are you talking about the verticle rod that locates the front edge of the side curtain and the door latch strikes it? If so it is shown in mu photo sub album for canvas tops under M38A1.

It would be the enlarged area in circle "N".

These M38A1's came from Willys only with the canvas top. No side curtains and no doors or rods. This is why most A1's have an empty bottomless hole there. This drawing is from the Factory side curtain/door kit that was only installed in the field. The add on lower socket has a tab bent over the bottom that catches the rod.

This quarter of the large drawing shows the area pointed to by "B". Note the small bracket/socket and the note to drill two holes for it on both sides of the tub.

This M38A1 never had the factory side curtain kit installed in the field.

This M38A1 has the side curtain kit installed.

Wes to the rescue. Thanks. It all makes sense now. I've seen the footmans loops added to the side ledge for the side curtains. Those weren't on either as it left Willys. Also the sliders on the back of the windshield. Then the 8 turnbuckles for the lower front edge of the door. These were machine screw type threaded turnbuckles, not the sheet metal screw type. I got lucky and have a set of sliders that were installed on a '51 M38 incorrectly, and they fit and line up with original holes on the A1. Last question: I see in the photos a tall footmans loop????????? Will the shorter ones work? Thanks again Wes for your time. John

Someone has taken the liberty of using a tall one in that photo where all short ones are depicted in the factory kit installation drawings seen above it.
