From what I can find the fuel pump bolts on OEM M38 fuel pumps
are the same on both sides, but the M38A1 bolts are different.

If that is true, is it because the OEM M38 pump did not come with the
priming lever like the A1 pump and is a different casting

If I am installing a pump with the priming lever on an L-head M38
do I use one long and one short bolt?

Thanks,

You are correct. The A1 had one shorter bolt because of the hand prime lever. You will need to use the same set up on the 38 if you are using the later pump.

I exchanged a non-lever pump and got a rebuilt pump with a lever back (which is ok by me). I already had 2 long bolts and used them to mount the pump with the lever (with the thick spacer under it). Neither bolt interferes with the lever. I haven't fired the motor yet. Can bad things happen using 2 long bolts? I mean other than losing points during inspection. Shocked

You'll only lose points if it's a factory resto Ron!

The M38 came with the pump with no priming lever.
Motor Pool you are good to go.

Hopefully Wes or John can answer your question about the bolts
interfering.

The M38 came with two equal length bolts:
WO# 800471, ORD# 7375385 Screw, sp, hex hd, S, cd or zn-pltd, 5/16"-18NC-3 x 2".

The M38A1 used one bolt:
WO# 800471, ORD# 7375385 Bolt, hex hd, S, cd or zn-pltd, 5/16"-18NC-3 x 5 1/8".

Thru eng sn MD49065 2nd bolt was:
ORD# 122058, Bolt, machine, cap, hex hd, S, cd- or zn-pltd, 5/16"-18NC-3 x 1 7/8". (Note: This is a plain old fashion std hex head.)

From eng sn MD49066 & on, 2nd bolt was:
WO# 809689, ORD# 8332521, Bolt, machine, hex hd, sp,S, cd- or zn-pltd, 5/16"-18NC-3 x 3 1/8".

Note the difference in the primary bolt descriptions for the same bolt WO# 800471! We can guess the M38 ORD 9 referenced the threaded length of the special (sp) screw whereas the m38A1 ORD 9 referenced the overall lenth of the special (sp) hex hd bolt.

The longer forward bolt does not interfere with the pump handle operation if used on the aft side of the pump. It becomes very difficult to install and remove if used there. That is why the shorter standard hex head was used in early M38A1 production but it too was difficult to hold onto and insert and start with that handle in the way thus the late M38A1 came with a shortened version of the long hex head.

Thanks Wes!
Thanks Brian!

The pump was awkward to mount, but not too difficult.

Looks like I'm not going to tear anything up or lose points on inspection after all.

I have used the middle bolt in both holes with no problems. If you use a 1/4" drive ratchet, 6 or 8" extension and a 1/2" flex (universal) socket they are easy to install.

The bolt is square. That is an optical illusion caused by the light, the angle and the camera.
