I'm working on the transmission for my M38. I bought a NOS speedometer cable for it. When I tried to connect the cable to the transfer case I noticed that the speedometer gear was for a CJ, square end and a short sleeve. So I bought the correct gear and longer sleeve. It doesn't fit. It turns out the old short sleeve had a thread count of 22 and the longer sleeve a thread count of 18. I thought I could just install a new gear with the longer sleeve. So my question is do I need a different rear bearing cap for the M38 gear and sleeve or am I missing something? I wasn't aware there was a difference

Yes you probably have a CJ2A transfer case however all you should need are the correct M38 sleeve and driven gear.

The 2A parts are:

Sleeve 636396
Gear, driven, 15T A5707
Gear, Drive, 4T A-1511
Retainer cap A-9330

The M38 Parts are:
Sleeve short thru MC44029. 801092 (SP# 55-454-2
Sleeve, long after MC44029. 806719 (SP# 55-454-3)
Gear, driven, 15T, short thru MC44029. 801696 (SP# 18-453-9)
Gear, Driven, 15T, tall after MC44029. 806718 (SW# 448361)
Gear, Drive 4T. A-1511
Retainer cap. A-9330
