I had been asking about the holes in an M38 front bumper and over time some new questions came up.

My M38 is s/n 51xxx so it has the later front lifting shackles. To accomodate the top bolt for the shackle bracket there is a 5/8" hole.
On the early jeeps with the first series lifting shackles was this hole 7/16"?

I noticed in the photo gallery that the first series jeeps coming down the production line do not have the 1/2" hole on the front face of the bumper at each outboard end.

Do any of you with the '51 early shackles also have 1/2" holes located 3" from each end?

Tom,
I checked a dozen early factory and military photos and you are right. Everyone with the old style front shackles do not have the two outboard holes.

I also checked the ORD 9's and I found the following:

In the 1950 ORD 9 G740:
WO# 801386 ORD STK# G740-7372818 ORD Part# 7372818
Attached with six 3/8x24 NF-3x3/4 cap screws

In the 1955 ORD 9 G-740
WO# 801386 ORD STK# G740-7372818 ORD Part# 7372818 supersedes to-
WO# 808969 ORD Stk# G758-8331831 ORD Part# 8331831
Attached with six 3/8x24 NF-3x3/4 cap screws

In the 1956 ORD 9 G-758
WO# 801386 ORD STK# G740-7372818 ORD Part# 7372818 supersedes to-
WO# 808969 ORD Stk# G758-8331831 ORD Part# 8331831
Attached with six 3/8x24 NF-3x7/8 cap screws (Note bolt length change)

So what the ORD's tell us is the partnumber for the M38 bumper remained changed throughout M38 priduction and into early M38A1 production. Then The M38A1 introduced a new style bumper and this bumper was used to supersede for replacement purposes the early bumper.

This means that the two 1/2" outboard holes on the later version of the M38 bumper were probably a drawing change at Willys without a part number change and obviously without changing the top frame mount bolt part number 123520 (3/8-24NF-3x3/4) which should have went to the 120424 (1/2x20NF-3x1 1/4") shckle bracket bolt.

Thanks Wes,

A point of confusion still: TM9-804 figure 19 shows one small bolt on top, one on the front and (I'm assuming) two on the bottom. That would be 4 per side - 8 total. But this doesnt agree with the Ord 9 (calling for 6):

In the 1950 ORD 9 G740:
WO# 801386 ORD STK# G740-7372818 ORD Part# 7372818
Attached with six 3/8x24 NF-3x3/4 cap screws

One other note from the picture fig 19 is that there are only 2 bolts holding the wood in place. I don't have a copy of the 1950 ord to confirm if it calls out 2 or 4.

Details details,

Tom

The 1950 Ord 9 calls out for bolts for the wood.

The TM 9-804 photos shows the two outboard holes empty.

I noticed my bumpers did not have bolts in the bottom inboard hole.
