Im currently running the standard carter carb on my M38 .I went back to it after being disappointed with the new Solex replacement . I still have one or two flooding issues with the carter even after having rebuilt it . Has anybody out there tried an SU. downdraught carb in its place .(or even the stromberg unit ) I used to have one on a series 1 Landrover .It performed faultlesly for years ,the economy was great as was the performance .Totally uncomplicated design .
Barrabas, Sorry to hear about your carburator troubles. Either the Carter or the Solex should work nicely, IF set up properly. If you can not sort them out, do you think you will have no issues with SUs or Strombergs? They will come from a different make, model, intake design, displacement, fuel requirement etc. they will have to be calibrated to your jeep. "Totally uncomplicated design"? Yes, until you start delve into them deeper. Not, if your job is setting one up for a different application starting from zero. SUs (H, HS, HD etc.) are sidedraft not downdraught. Some pre-war SUs were downdraught, but to find them and to get parts for them will not be easy. You'll have to mount a sidedraught on the existing manifold or make a new manifold. The flooding issue with your Carter will be the least of your problems. Its up to you, but you already have two carbs which are excellent. Find somebody to help you with them or ask for help here or look for info in manuals, whatever. Don't blame the carbs! _________________ 1960 M38A1, M100 Trailer
