I know this has been discussed/debated for a long time, but here is some evidence that appears to show OD paint was the original paint from the factory and Air Force blue was added later.

Your photo file size is way to large. Try to keep your photos at no larger then 250K.

You'll need to be able to make your photos available to the public before they will post here with your photobucket account. Much easier to just use an album here on our web site.

The USAF began directing the Strata Blue from the factory late in M38 production. The earlier "Army procured for the Air Force" M38's were painted Strata Blue over the 2430 OD. Plenty of arguments both ways over the years. New tubs procured by the USAF in the late 50's / early 60's would have come in Strata Blue.

These photos are already uploaded in my album. Must not have loaded them correctly here.

Your files are too large. Keep the photos you load on our web site at no more than 250K.

Hi Guys,

Looking at Kendall's pic it shows the first coat is red oxide. Did both the M38 and A1 get shot with red oxide primer on the assembly line.....or was that only done during depot rebuilds?

Thanks,
Bob

The Army contracts for the M38 dictated the paint would be OD2430 with the primer layer & finish coat both being the same paint , OD2430.

The only USAF paint specs to date that I have seen are for the individual replacement parts like wheels & ect.

Thanks Wes.......that's what I thought. So that would mean Kendall's jeep went thru a depot rebuild while in Army possession.....and then at some point in it's life went over to the Air Force and got painted Strata Blue. That would also mean it wasn't assembled initially under an AF contract, but rather an Army contract......no?

Regards,
Bob

The Army was primary contractor for all wheeled tactical vehicles from 1948 thru about 1955 under the DOD. So we have never seen a USAF contract written with Willys for a M38. This M38 may have been originally issued to the USAF with OD2430 and repainted by the USAF in the field. To date we have no evidence the USAF utilized any of the Army vehicle overhaul depots nor is there any evidence the USAF ever operated vehicle overhaul depots.

Hi Wes,

Yes, your right. I was just thinking about these jeeps for the AF in terms of my M37, which is an AF truck. It only has one coat of paint over the strata blue and no OD under that. The AF M37s sub assemblies were painted black before delivery to the assembly line and then hit with strata blue over that. I would assume the AF jeeps would have been done the same way..........but it was a different company and a different assembly line........so it's not apples to apples. Thanks for the info!

regards,
bob
