Cleaning up and painting engine compartment and noticed that dipstick tube sits into engine somewhat loosely and looks like it has been leaking. Is there any gasket or anything used at the bottom of the tube where it goes into engine? Anybody else have issues here? I did a search of forum but every question is about the stick itself or the gasket on the filler cap.
F-134 in an 53 M38A1

There is a clamp near the top but it was tight.

It should be clamped to the bottom rear oil filter mount bolt. There is also a spacer between the clamp & the pipe to keep the pipe tight. No gasket at bottom of pipe but if pipe has been loose for a long time then that will explain the wear between the pipe and the cast iron hole. I would remove the pipe, thoroughly clean & degrease both it and the cast iron hole and apply a non-hardening, non-silicon sealant on the two surfaces during re-assembly.

Thx Wes! I am missing the spacer on the clamp so I will build one to hold it tighter - I find no reference to this spacer and numerous people are selling the original clamp on ebay with NO spacer but....makes sense. I was already cleaning up the tube to get a better fit and will seal it as you say.

The spacer, pipe & bracket, support oil filler pipe (clamp) are all listed in the M38A1 ORD 9 in section 106.5, page 52.

I offer this more for info---At one of the swap meets I was at, a machinist had made a swage or die, to run through the length of the oil fill pipe to bring back the interference fit at the bottom of the pipe like it had from the factory. After the pipes have been taken out and driven back in a few times, they lose the tight fit needed to keep the pipe from leaking. The good news is, there are several venders that have NOS oil fill pipes for the M38A1 for around $20 plus shipping. I bought the swage or die to restore the fit on the harder to find oil fill pipes.

As Wes has pointed out, some non-harden gasket sealer will also do the job nicely--I have use this method many times.

The die Harold refers to our common exhaust pipe expander tools. These will also solve the problem but great care must be used to insure you do not expand them too large or split the tube.

This set (available at Walmart for $23) will service pipe as small as 1 1/8" ID. The dipstick tube ID at it's bottom end is 1 5/32".

thanks Harold and Wes, going to see if my buddy has a exhaust pipe tool - never knew they existed! I think I am learning more about tools rebuilding this $%^&# Jeep than I am about the Willys itself!

Think of it as a tool acquisition program!

I bought a modified box open end wrench
heated and bent to adjust GM distributors
at a resale shop for a couple of bucks.

I’m a Ford, now Willys guy.

I couldn’t help myself.
