I have moved on to the rear axle (Dana 44). I have removed all components from each rear wheel. The manual states I should be able to pull the axle shaft and bearings out. Its a no go. It seems the bearing race is frozen in-place. How can I pull axle out? Any Ideas?

The bearing race is an interference fit with the diff tube. A slide hammer should do the trick. You can also search YouTube for "Willys Jeep Differential Rebuild" and a couple good videos will pop up.
After you remove the hub, and drum and the bearing/seal retainer you can use a slide puller to pop the axle/bearing assembly out of the tube. You can also put the axle hub & nut back on and pull the axle/bearing assembly out. The bearing is pressed onto the axle shaft. If you need a new bearing you'll need the special puller or at least a collar adapter for using a press to remove the bearing from the shaft.

I put axle nut on each axle then used a 5 pound hammer to pound each axle. when you drive the right axle it pushes out the left axle.... then you slide -in the left axle and pound it until the right axle pops out. No brainier, I did check each axle closley to see if I had damaged them... all good.
The concern is not about damaging the inboard ends of the axles. It is about damaging the inner bearings and the spider gear assembly. I would suggest you follow the established procedures for maintenance on these axles to prevent unwanted repairs later on. _________________ Wes K
