Howdy all,

I've got a theoretical question about the transfer case vent line. Does the pressurization of the transfer case and transmission create any problems for older gaskets? I would imagine that it doesn't create that much pressure, but I'm just curious.

Thanks!

The pressurization of the engine, transfer case and transmission, was designed to prevent the ingress of water while fording.

The deep water fording operation used 2 valves that were pulled by a single cable in the cab. This closed the engine from the atmosphere and allowed it to pressurize which also pressurizes the transfer case and transmission.

A drain plug was installed in the bottom of the transmission bell housing to prevent water reaching the clutch and flywheel.

The fuel tank cap also had a valve inside of it that was closed to prevent ingress of water into the fuel tank. The tank has another vent line that runs into the cross over tube in between the air filter and the carb.

It was meant to only be used for a short time during fording. Once the fording was complete the vehicle was returned to normal operation and the fluids checked for any water that made its way in.

Once fording was complete the vehicle was returned to normal operation as soon as possible an the fluids were checked for any water that may have entered.

If any water was discovered in the fluids, they would be changed at the earliest possible time.

As for the gaskets and seals, continued use past normal fording operations would cause issues and leaking from the seals around the drive shaft output seals. The gaskets would most likely hold up as most of the pressure would make its way out the easiest way possible.

Bill, The short answer is probably not. Gaskets are retained under great pressure by the bolts holding covers and cases together. Seals however being more flexible and less restricted were more prone to leak lightly under the approximate 2 1/2 PSI differential. As already mentioned the duration of use under pressure was expected to be short duration only followed by detailed inspections.
