Is any one picked up any Civil Defense Jeeps? We have run across quite a few M38A1s. We restored one back to CD for the Sam Werner Museum. Looking to possibly do another but looking for unusual original Paint Schemes.

I had a M38A1 from Pennington County Civil Defense South Dakota from 1986-90. Sold it to a young troop from Montana in 1990.
It was original 24V with a hard top and standard rear spare carrier. I added the hinged across the back spare & dual gas can carrier, the civvy vinyl top and the white spoke wheels. I used it for a daily driver and hunting in the Black Hills. I commuted 25 miles each way for 4 years on I-90 from my home in Blackhawk on the west side of Rapid City to Ellsworth AFB on the east side. _________________ Wes K

My 1952 M38A1 had civil defense markings on it when I found it in a field. It also had township fire department markings. It looks like it was painted red with (fancy) white pin-striping. There was also stenciled on the rear- "This Equipment Was Purchased In Part With Federal Funds For Civil Defense Use. Removal Is(?) A(?) Violation of This Identification ...(?)". Parts of it were illegible.

I think your reddish paint was originally the same Orange as mine. I did not repaint mine. That is the original Civil Defense paint job. _________________ Wes K
