I don't know. I never served in NATO. I was so lucky all my tours were in the sunny vacation paradise know as SEA.
I have perused 2 M38's that were shipped home from Europe in the 70's. Neither had any undercoating.
I am from the school of thought that thinks very little of undercoating when it is applied in the field to unclean (read not virgin painted) surfaces. _________________ Wes K

OK, I got the OD fever & took the plunge . A friend & I picked up this M-38 & M-100 trailer yesterday and brought it back to KC . I’m sure I will be asking a lot of questions in the coming weeks & months . I had a little trouble getting it started this morning It has been a long time since I messed with a carb & manual choke
Positives:
It runs & stops good
Has a decent body & OK paint
Lots of extra parts & manuals
Nice trailer in good shape.
Ran the kids around the neighborhood today, a little cold, but we all had a blast . I even got the wife to go for a short ride .
Negativities:
12 V (maybe not so much a negative as just not a positive)
Replacement gauges (due to 12 v)
Home made wiring harness
