If it had that plate, it most likely had this sticker

I doubt that decal would have been on this M38 transferred in the 1960's from military surplus stocks to Pakistan. Those Willys produced decals would have been used on brand new vehicles shipped directly from Willys.

On another note, why do you suppose Willys married that decal to the FC170 cab forward trucks?

I didn't realize I lost that much detail when I resized it. That particular drawing was from the FC Audio Visual Truck. It is the same image used on the M38A1's in the early 1960's. I was just associating it with the Aid program vehicles, not a particular vehicle.

The disturbing news here is that the M38, DONATED by the USA to a friendly government for the good of it's general citizenry, was "liberated" for sale to what appears to be a private citizen, SK.

I hope we didn't increase the "economic prosperity" of some government bureaucrat, in the process of trying to do a good deed.

I guess the good news is another M38 is saved from destruction, or worse, a Jitney.

Take good care of it SK, that is our tax dollars at work.
Best Jeff

PS: Is this why I flinch when I pay my taxes every year?

I also flinch when I pay taxes every year. But not because a 10 year old M38 jeep donated to a foreign government in the 1960's and since then 60 years later & Older is retired from service and sold to a civilian citizen of that country. Our country surpluses out military vehicles that are as young as 5 years old.

After re-reading this interesting post up to this point, and unless I missed it, after several questions from members asking where this M38 is physically located today, the OP hasn't answered that question.

I'm going to bite my tongue and not comment about paying taxes. It would take this post into the ditch like a busted tie-rod in a heartbeat..... Shocked Laughing

Very interesting find!

Curious, is that plate riveted to an engine? Or frame? Or body?

Too bad there's no date on it (when the jeep was "donated"), and who (what country) it was donated to.

I always thought that USAID provides surplus U.S. Government Property to counterpart civilian agencies of friendly foreign governments, but not for the military. USAID donating tanks and guns too? Didn't the CIA run guns through USAID in SEA during the 1960's and 1970's, or is that urban legend? I thought "Military Assistance" wasn't handled by USAID, but could be mistaken.

It is riveted on glove box.
I don't know the exact date, but this jeep was donated during the late 50's or early 60's and the country is Pakistan.

Ok Wes, if you say so. I thought he might straighten me out for asking a reasonable question. His member profile doesn't bother to give his location. Maybe I should've asked where he is?

I took his comment to mean that the original USAID donation was to Pakistan ---- not that the jeep is physically located there today.

I guess I take English too literally. Rolling Eyes It's what I get for being an autodidact.

Wes & Jeff,

Why you guys flinch while paying your taxes. Is it because of these jeeps ignored and left over to rot in other countries OR what?

SK, you're in Pakistan, right?

That being true, you're much better positioned to research. Just because it's a US agency and program doesn't mean much was published here in the US on their specific aid packages. That would be in government archives.

Pakistan, as the recipient, would have a lot more details on that. Somewhere in the Pakistani government that was tracked at some level. I have no idea what information, government publications, or news agencies/services are in Pakistan and what may still be in operation today as in the 1960s or 70s.

I would start online doing internet searches there and with the major news services. Then I would reach out to the Pakistani government and explain what you're doing - researching the history of your jeep. My impression of the Pakistani government is they're suspicious of what they consider odd information requests. However, I'm sure they have some citizen facing and focused group that you could start with.

You could also write the USAID themselves, explain your research objective, and see if they can help you.

Inshallah

SK,
That research is on you. I think what you're looking for will be over there, as I pointed out in my post. You're in the best position to find things out.
