I just got an M38 but it has a CJ3A engine from the mid-50s with 6V generator and starter. I am going to keep it 24V but like the idea of changing to a 24V alternator 10SI. There are a bunch out there along with tons of clones. Any suggestions on where to get one and any specifics on it (ie has to be GM and amperage). Also is there a starter, coil, and distributor I need to get? Thanks

Hi Lee,
Welcome to the forum!

This thread dates back to 2018 --- 4 years old now.
You might want to ask your questions in a new post in the Technical Knowledge Base.
Maybe one of the moderators will move it for you.

Your best bet to discover and identify parts to run 24 volts is the Army parts manual for the M38, ORD9 SNL G740, along with the rest of the Army manuals for the M38 --- all available for free in the Downloads Section of this forum.
Having the manuals helps put us all on the same page when asking and discussing technical questions.

Yes, 24V Starter, 24V Distributor (coil is inside the distributor on the M38), 24V dash gauges, 24V light bulbs, probably a new wiring harness, correct pulley for your new 24V 10SI alternator, two batteries instead of one --- to name a few.
It's not going to be cheap, and some stuff can be challenging to find.
We're fortunate to have a half-dozen or so excellent military vehicle parts vendors.

Post us some photo's of your M38.
Does it have the original data plates (dash and patent) with matching serial numbers?

I'm just down the road from you near Charleston.

Good luck!
