Gentlemen: On monday 7-9-07 the Newark Star Ledger newspaper did a story on the 40th anniversary of the now infamous Newark, New Jersey riots of 1967. The front page photo shows a national guardsmen crouched down behind the rear of an M-38 jeep. It's interesting to see that they were still being driven as late as 1967!

Tom: Some very interesting photographs! How does someone from Georgia have pictures of riots in New Jersey? The second photo was the one on the front page of the Star Ledger. I an a lieutenant in the New Jersey State police (28 years) and I heard a lot of "stories" from troopers that were in the Newark riots during my career. If you have any more photos of troopers I would enjoy seeing them. Thanks, Dennis. |

Dennis,
The pictures came from the WWW. Your initial post got me started so I 'googled' them. Just wanted to see what my 52 M38 could have looked way back when. So when I found them, I thought I share with you guys. I see that your occupation is law enforcement; so just don't arrest me for any possible copyright violation. |

No problem Tom. I've seem some photos of the troops but I never saw any in jeeps before. They were usually in troop cars, carrying Reising submachine guns, shotguns or M1 Garands. Those plastic helmet lines and 50 cents goggles we were issued back then were a joke! Thank god we've come a long way as far as equipment goes! Regards, Dennis |

Very interesting,
in that 4th photo from the end, of the motor pool, the M38A1s on the right seem to have over sized tyres (or is it a camera effect) and is the far right one an A1 or a M38 ar an M38A1 with cut wings??
Brillinat photos,
Dave. |

Can anybody tell me where to find these photos on the www. on my laptop I can only get these at about 12cm by 7cm. I've tried seaching but can't find these pics. I'd love to be able to try and get them bigger without losing resolution (is that the right word?)
Thanks,
Dave |
