That's a good shot of a late M38 dash. That empty hole at the far right is correct also.

There were several changes during production. Use our M38 serial number database to note some of them. This illustration is a fairly early shot of the M38 dash from the TM.

Depending on when your jeep was built some changes to note are:

Ignition switch had no "On-Off" plate thru serial MC26272 then the plate was added from MC26273 thru the end of production. There was an Army MWO G740-W5 OCT 52 that retrofitted the plate to the earlier jeeps.

Individual data plates fastened directly to the dash thru MC34151 and fastened to seperate plate then the plate assembly was fastened to the dash. This serial number is also the change point for the introduction of the large hole in the dash for the add-on heater system duct. When heater kits were installed in the field on earlier jeeps the hole was cut then and when the heater was removed the dash data plates were then installed on the large plate which was then installed on the dash.

Factory installed dash mounted fuel primer pump. Used on MC's thru MC47771. There was a MWO G740-W2 Nov 52 that deactivated the primer pumps on the earlier M38's.

First style main light switch thru MC35387 and second style from MC35388 thru MC66734. These looked the same from the face of the switch.

Third style main light switch from MC66735 & on.

Early instrument cluster has 4 extra screw holes for the circuit breaker and cable clip thru MC65042. There was also two decals on the later instrument cluster. One for the high beam indicator and one below the fuel gage.

There was a TB ORD 560 May 54 that revised the tire service pressures and directed a restamping of the data on the servicing data plate.

So there is a lot of homework needed for a very thorough factory restoration. It's a little easier for the guys building motor pool class and drivers.
