You can be assured many of us know how. Had you done a search on this forum you would have found your question gets asked about once a month.
The answer is in the manuals.
Yes you just need to access the correct manuals. In this case the Army has a TB9-2300-228-20 Tactical Transport and Combat Vehicles: Troubleshooting for Instrument Cluster Gages, Switches, Circuit Breakers, Sending Units and Related Wiring dated 8 July 1960. And Bob Westerman has it and his refinements on his web site where you can download them.
It is very important that before you start troubleshooting you take care of the basics.
1-Do you have the correct gages and senders and do they match each other? (IE 0-60 PSI oil gage must be used with the 0-60 PSI sender)
2-Are all electrical connections clean and tight? (This includes the battery terminals) (This was a trick question in a way since you can't answer it by trying to wiggle the connection or by looking at it while it is connected. You must disconnect it to look for corrosion on the joints contact surfaces.)
3-Is the main engine to frame ground strap installed, corrosion free and tight. (It's attached to the front engine mounting plate right below the generator.
4-Is the instrument cluster panel grounded securely to the dash?
5-Is the gas tank grounded securely to the tub?
If you are not familiar with the military waterproof harness components be sure to read up on them. Both the Douglas (metal) connectors and the Packard (rubber) connectors can fail in several ways not immediately clear to a cursory inspection. _________________ Wes K

Wes,
I have every manual for an M38A1 that Midwest Military sells I must have missed that one. But the jeep is now in pieces, I have only the plate with the gauges. I was hoping you could tell me how i could power them up and bench test them to see if they even function.
Take time to thoroughly review Bob's site and TM 9-8014 and you will see how to test them and power them.
The paperback manuals that just about all the vendors sell are produced by Portrayal Press. You can eliminate the middle man by going directly to their web site. http://www.portrayal.com/
