Investigating my carb setup at this point and see that my setup is not what is supposed to be on a m38. Is this a M38A1 carburetor? My intake doesn't look correct and base of carb doesn't appear correct.

The intake is most likely from a DJ3A. I have one that came from a DJ3A and uses a civilian YF carburetor. The larger bore on the carburetor gives the flat head a whopping 3 more horsepower!!

If more information is needed, I can take pictures and give the carburetor model number. For now, it is not stock for your M38---I would run it until you can source the correct parts, if that is what you want to do. Original M38 intake manifolds are pricey as are the carburetors.

This engine came out of a willys pickup, and if my memory serves me right, the intake manifold is from that truck too. How can I be sure this is a ys950? If I knew for sure, I could maybe use it to trade for the correct m38 carb or sell it for what it is. I have the jeep torn down to the frame, so will want to get this corrected in time.

I'm going to assume that the 950 on this tag means this is a ys950 carb?

Yes the YS on the carb body combined with the 950S on that tag make it a YS950S!
