I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how oil gets through from the inside of the oil filter, on a M38A1, down to the exit at the bottom of the centre mounting tube. The tube does not appear to have any holes in it and the oil filter seals at the top and bottom of the oil filter on the tube.
From the Tech manual it shows oil entering the oil filter assembly in the side and exiting at the bottom of the oil filter assembly. I can see oil getting into the oil filter, but not out of it.

Hi Sarah. I know how you feel. When I was cleaning out the cannister I expected to find many large drain holes in the center pipe. I wiped it down and couldn't see any at all. After repeated cleanings with mineral spirits, I finally did find a tiny hole. I couldn't believe it was enough to do the job. _________________ Support our troops, past and present.

I cleaned the tube with methylated spirits and I also found a really small hole as well. I expected a series of bigger holes as well.
Glad I found it with your help.
Unfortunately once we put the new oil filter on and started the engine, we noticed oil weeping out of the oil line going to the oil filter. The oil line does look very old, so we will replace both of the oil lines connected to the oil filter.
