Check this out from the G503 page:

http://www.mclallens.com/L-head/L-head.html

A lot of fantastic photos of how the M38 engine looked new in 1953.

Not mine

Certainly looks like a nice engine. I didn't see where he listed what he was asking for it.

I am certainly no expert on these things, nor do I doubt the authenticity of the engine, but the lumber does look a little suspect of being over 50 years old. It would add a lot of creditbilty to it if the actual cover that sealed it was shown in the pics. All in all some great photos though!!

I noticed the fresh crate as well. It is possible it's a combination of the lighting and the fact he says it has sat in a warehouse all these years.

Another thought/question, is the crate that NOS fording kits come in made from rough sawn lumber? Would Willys have bought planed lumber for crating purposes? Someone who bought one of the $50.00 in a crate jeeps would know, but the ones my freinds Dad was going to buy never happened. Although he did send a down payment, which he never got back. This was back in my High School days ,which was a few years ago though.

Does anyone know how much he is asking? I won't be asking him as I know it is way out of my price range. Plus, I already have a good engine. It's probably worth as much as an entire unrestored M38 in decent condition.

I think here is your answer, "QUOTE"

We have found this very difficult to price because it is such a rare find. We have received advice from "experts" in the business that vary significantly from $4,500 to $8,000. We have had lots of interest so we will take the best offer?

The lumber inside the crate looks new but I'm sure is enhanced by the sodium vapor lighting in the shop where we took these pictures. Please don't be shy about giving us a bid on this. It is very hard to estimate a value as it is so rare - nothing to go by. We have had some expert opinions as noted above but I would like to sell it to someone who is going to use it for its intended purpose, as a replacement engine for an M38. It would be a shame to modify it to fit something else.

We will try to get some casting numbers later on this week.

Hi Ryan,
There are a lot more pictures at http://www.mclallens.com/L-head/L-head.html

We will try to get pictures of the casting numbers off the head and block. Also a picture of the timing marks. Anything else?

Pete
