Hello M38 owner,

Please take a few moments to answer these questions about your M38’s or CJV-35/U's L134 engine. We are trying to refine our data base even more.

1-What is your engine’s serial number?
2-Engine Casting number (right lower side of block)
3-Is there a oval serial space on the upper right front side behind oil filter?
4-Does the rear flange of the block have 4 or 10 bolt holes?
5-Does the right side of the block have 4 or 2 expansion plugs (freeze plugs)?
6-Is your timing mark on the flywheel or front crank pulley?

Guide Photos for this survey can be viewed here:

Send this survey to me at wsknettl@centurytel.net

Try a little recreational fishing at Caddo Lake, Bistineau or Lake of the Pines then a healthy dinner at the Catfish Kitchen and the answers will come!! Laughing

Here is my info on my M38.

1- MC 92218
2-Engine Casting number 641087-L_W12A-N1-CR-N2
3-can't tell.
4-looks like 10 bolts
5-2 freeze plugs
6-Haven't found that yet
7-haven't found that yet
8-have not looked yet
9-M38 Serial # MC 21950

Now i do not have the one dash tag with the serial number on it,that is missing. But i do have the tag on the rear passenger wheel well and that is where the MC 21950 is marked.
can anyone tell me the date of my m38?

Engine serials after MC74419 should have four 3/8's bell hosing mount bolt holes and six 5/16" bell housing plate to block mount holes (3 vertically on each side of the engine). Take a look at the photo site I listed on the survey which shows the areas of interest.

Best guess is May/Jun 1951. The 1950 production jeeps only had the year for a DOD on their tags and the early half of 1951 was the same with only the year of DOD shown.

This is what I have -

I have a Willys plate with SN CJ2B 35373 - We are still trying to get the title right - I wish I had zeroxed it so I knew how it read.

1-What is your engine’s serial number? - unknown

2-Engine Casting number (right lower side of block)

8 20
641087-L-W10A N1-CR-N2

3-Is there a oval serial space on the upper right front side behind oil filter? no

4-Does the rear flange of the block have 4 or 10 bolt holes? Has 4

5-Does the right side of the block have 4 or 2 expansion plugs (freeze plugs)? Has 4 – 2 over 2

6-Is your timing mark on the flywheel or front crank pulley? I can’t find any on the front crank pulley and right now I have the wiring off so I can’t turn it over - I would guess it is on the flywheel viewed though the inspection hole under the starter, but how to index??

There is a large stamped number high on the block just over the #1 cyl manifold D246CI

This engine has a Willys industrial head - it may well be a complete Willys industrial out of a gen set, air compressor or other. Could be a Willys industrial head on the original CJ2B - 60 years – who knows.

Just took delivery of a PE95-K genset.

Engine is as follows:

1. M(b) 281144 Confirmed on the rebuild tag which is surprisingly - French..

2. 7 - 16 638632 W4 A NI - CR ' 2

3. yes - oval patch

4. 4 mounting bolt holes

5. 4 frost plugs

6. Front of the flywheel, with the cute wee timing cover...

best I can tell - mb/gpw air cleaner, carb elbow, carb, gen tensioner, and the featureless cyl head..
