I haven't touched base with him on that yet. What time I had to mess with it today I took the floor pans back off to view the clutch operation and made some more adjustments which still doesn't help the OD engaging on the run. What I think is, that even though the transmission input shaft stops rotating when the clutch is engaged, the T/C gears are still turning which inturn is rotating the OD gears, and therefore I can't engage the unit. That is my guess. Because I can put the T/C in neutral and engage the OD, but then I can't put the T/C back in gear.
How others who have installed them do it I wish we could get some answers from them.
I'll try Herm tomorrow. _________________ Tropical Veteran

Of coarse my theory and thinking were wrong. Herm says to put some miles on it to loosen it up.
He says to leave it in forward gear when shifting into OD and use double clutch method. _________________ Tropical Veteran

I was causing the problem all along. Ignorance. The secret is, Do Not engage the clutch if you want to shift from DD into OD. Just let off the gas followed by moving the shift lever forward. Most of the time it slips right in. Sometimes it takes few tries. Now I am really liking it.
This thread is gonna be history. _________________ Tropical Veteran

Ken,
Not to beat up a dead horse here, but, I have a WARN overdrive in my M38A1. I have no problems engaging / disengaging it anywhere on the gear range. It gives me no hassles whatsoever, and pretty much always goes in the first time. I find it odd that you cannot shift it by pressing the clutch.
I have never tried to shift it without the use of the clutch. Infact, I am quite surprised that it works as you describe as I would have never thought the gears would mesh up. Does this work at all speeds? Or does this only work at low speeds? _________________ Bob Collins

I also put the clutch cross shaft in the ' wrong' but i like the smooth clutch pedal, In the other way it is hard to push on the clutchpedal. I have no overdive installed. The jeep drives fast enough
Erik

Bob I don't know, maybe different brand OD's don't engage the same. Herm said my brand & manufacture was ATV overdrive by Herm.
I really don't care which way I have to do it, so long as it engages. I do have to egage the clutch to switch back to Direct Drive though.
Erik, thanks for the compliment. I haven't put the electronic ignition in yet. I had bought a used distributor to put it in but it needs a bushing kit.
And I haven't been able to drive the pin out that holds it together. One day I may just stick it in the one on the motor and see how it it performs. _________________ Tropical Veteran
