Perhaps Keith B has the drawing for the original M38 bumper 801386 that might show the amended upper bumper to frame mount bolt change from 3/8" to 1/2". This would also help nail down the date the late front shackle appeared on the M38.

Maybe he could also clear up the switch from narrow M38A1 bumper 801386 to the wide M38A1 bumper 808969.

It's a leftover form the CJ3A production it was based on. The holes are for the old "T" style license plate bracket.

Has anyone found a license plate bracket that was located at the bottom center of the front bumper? I started disassembling mine, and I found a hinged bracket at the bottom. I am sorry I don't have pictures yet.

After I saw it, I could see that this would be a problematic place for a plate, but the hinge made me wonder if it was for something else (like for officer markings). Any thoughts on this?

Pickle:
if yours is an M38CDN then they commonly had a hinged bracket on the lower edge of the front bumper since the Canadian Army did use license plates (unlike USA). Whether this front mount was factory installed I don't but for sure there was a unique rear license plate holder on the upper rear left corner of Ford M38CDN jeeps.

thanks Brian. It indeed is Canadian.
I have been looking in Ryan's Book, which is very useful for understanding the Willys M38, however, any Canadian additions/changes are not noted as well. Ryan has done an exceptional job otherwise.

Perhaps a collaboration between Ryan and I and a few of you knowledgeable
CDN folks would result in a CDN addendum to the book?
