Finally got some time to work on my M38 today and discovered a brass engine rebuild tag located adjacent to the oil pressure sending unit. One corner has been pulled from the block and subsequently creased the middle of the tag. That, plus paint and gunk are making it hard to read and make out the stampings.

Does anyone have a clear picture or an illustration of what the tag should say so I know what fields I'm trying to read?

Also, the tag appears to be rivited to the block as I can find no slots for a screwdriver. Is this normal?

Engine number on water pump boss: MC97051
Number on dash plate and wheel well plate: 56957
Date of Delivery: 3/52

Thanks!

Engine rebuild tags are usually riveted from the ones I have seen.

I should have a picture of one somewhere. Will check and post it when I find it.

Tony,
If you email me the picture of the rebuild tag I will post it for you.

Mine also had one, I don't have any photos of it yet. When I rebuilt the engine I cleaned it up and fastened it back in place. It was held in place by the same type of drive pins/rivets that hold the chains on the lifting rings in place.

They are called drive screws and can be found at most quality hardware stores.
