Well....either I threw out my new exhaust flange gaskets with the delivery box or I stashed them in a book someplace for safe keeping and now I can't find the book.....anyway....looks like I'll be cutting new gaskets. These are the ones that go between the three three-hole flanges located next to the bell housing.....in front of the muffler.....and just behind the rear crossmember. Do these gaskets have to be made from any special material or will standard gasket material suffice? Also.....is it common to have a little alignment problem with the middle pipe? Mine clears the center crossmember and engine stay-cable catch and the clutch bellcrank okay but it seems to be ending up too far inboard and too high right in front of the muffler. In fact, if the flanges are clocked correctly the "hump" in the pipe for the rear axle is jammed up against the crossmember where the two diagonal braces attach. Looks like if I put a very slight bend out and down in the area of the pipe just behind the back of the transfer case it should fit fine but before I go bending things I thought I'd check to see if this was normal. Thanks.

The center pipe on the m38 and m38a1 are different. Do you have the right one? Also if using a repo pipe made overseas ive heard of this problem as they only make one generic m38/a1 pipe. John at mid west military is making new accurate pipes here in the usa that will fit "right", I believe they are aluminized as well to prevent rust.

Yes repop exhaust system commonly have fit and alignment issues.

In the old days they were asbestos for the high heat application. Modern versions are composite with metal embedded. If you look in the right store you can find high temp exhaust system gasket material.

Well.......hmmmm.....now that I think about it...this is probably a problem of my own making. New motor mounts from one place....trans mount from another.....new exhaust manifold from another.....muffler from yet a fourth....but I did get my front and middle pipe from midwest military. So far everything has lined up really well so I just figured it was working out okay. And really....I'm only off about the thickness of the pipe both ways (in and up) at the muffler location. I'm gonna take the pipe to an exhaust shop on Friday and drink a six pack prior to installation and I bet it ends up fitting fine. If I'm really lucky maybe the guy will even swap me some gasket material for a beer! Then again....beer may be part of the reason I can't find my original flange gaskets any more......I know I saw them......hmmm....wonder if a beer might help find them........
