There weren't any markings from Willys. Some motor pools may have added markings in the field but you will not suffer any lost points for having no markings.

I purchased an N.O.S. under hood battery box cover from Brent Mullins and it, and all the other ones he had were black with a decal in the center. The decal was black and white and read ( WARNING disconnect battery leads before working on generator or regulator installations . Disconnect ground lead first). You could tell they were all old N.O.S..This raises another question, What color is the box and lid suppose to be?

This is something to double check.
The M38 prototype articles in recent AM magazine shows #7 with the decal that Stir-stick mentions on the underhood box. Its shown in the '56 TM9-8012 on pages 12 & 125.
The cowl box cover had no markings.

Color of the underhood box has been generally reported as 2430 OD and many have reported black tar covering the inside.

My M38 battery box and cover are OD with the
decal mentioned, however, the air cleaner
assembly is black. Wonder if they were made by
the same manufacturer?

Jim,
The box is seen O.D. and black. Why would they place the decal in the center of the N.O.S.,black lid knowing it's going to be repainted??? Has anyone else seen an N.O.S. lid (black or O.D.)?? Merry Christmas to ALL.

It's not uncommon for a vendor 's contracted part to meet a Willys spec which included a decal but neglected to comply with an OD finish. Perhaps we can see if Keith B has the box drawings from Willys that may shed some light on this.

I bought a used cover at the Dayton MVPA Nationals in 2006 and it appeared to be as is was from the factory - gloss black. (meaning, unchanged) It had the same warning decal and I just cleaned and painted around it the same color.
