Looking at this M38A1 I just got and surveying. Looking underneath, there seems to be a rectangular bracket on the middle crossmember, drilled w/ 4 holes. Is this the MG brace?

My MB has a circular (and bigger) plate for the MG, but I understand the mount (post) is smaller on the M38A1 than the M-31 post on my MB.

Thanks,

Yes, the rectangular plate is a mount for a pedestal. The pedestal has legs, which are also bolted through the floor to additional brackets which are welded to the frame. I believe it was a modification of the original ones used on older jeeps.

The late WWII M31 pedestal was modified slightly and re-designated the M31C for the M38 then it reverted back to the M31 for the M38A1.

Late WWII M31 After WWII this was revised to a M31C

M31A1 designed for the M38

M31C used after WWII on both the MB and the M38A1

Thanks guys,

I built a dummy M2HB & M-31 for the MB, I may build the M-31C pedestal (thanks for the pics), and remove the CJ-5 rollbar.

Thanks,
