Still having trouble figuring out why my turn signal flasher unit blows. I have a new one but don't want to install untill I figure out the problem. My first inspection of the wiring did not disclose any bare wires which would short out the system. Could there be anything to check within the lights housings themselves. If I decided to put a fuse in to protect the unit would I need 3 fuses ie one for each wire come out of the turn signal plug that goes into the flasher unit?

any suggestions would be appreciated. The turn signals worked fine for a couple of years but now keep blowing units (2 so far and hopefully not a 3rd as they are expensive.) Thanks.

If the lights do not trip the circuit breaker in the main light switch then your service brake and turn signal lamps at the rear are ok and that only leaves the two front turn lamps and the main turn signal lever switch.

Considering the price of those transistorized turn signal flasher boxes I would disconnect the entire turn signal system and ohm check each wire and circuit.

This is the box we are discussing?

The later single plug main light switches have a circuit breaker internally mounted. If you wish to add any circuit protection you could place it in the wire from pin J of the main light switch plug. The number on this wire may vary depending on kit used or vehicle.

Thanks so much. I did take the lenses off the two "added" front turn signals. They have an odd mounting system for the bulb. There is a "U" shaped piece that clips over two rubber grommets that two screws go through. When I took the lens off one of those was off the rubber and touching the inside of the metal cover (altho there were not any black marks which might indicate a short) so I am thinking that might be where the problem is. Anyway I will follow your suggestion and report back in a couple of days. Cheers.
