Greetings all , I just acquired this jeep from my neighbor and I am having a hard time identifying it , seems like a mish mash of parts but id like to know what Im dealing with( Im thinking MB?). any and all help is appreciated. The District of Colombia on the dash has me curious? Link to pics below

It looks to be a Heinz 57 jeep. The windshield is a M38 style with the bolted down center vent and lower edge wiper motors. The body is a Willys MB type with the fender tool boxes, dash gauge placement, glove box and no fuel filler hole or tailgate. But there are no tool indents?? There looks to be a plow attachment underneath (surprise, surprise) but I can't tell what the frame is from. A possibility the body is a repro MB? Check out the Bubba transmission cover and homemade front grill with CJ chrome trim rings! _________________ 1951 M38 |

Thanks for the replies guys , seems to have been owned by someone on a budget . I do not intend to restore it I plan to use it for what it was made for .......Hope you dont mind me stickin around and asking questions ?

Hello Dave,
I reviewed your photos and these are my observations:
Quote: | 1-Frame is probably CJ3A since it has no gussets for MB or CJ2A front bumper mounting and is not boxed like an M38. Need to see the crossmember just behind the front seats to be sure.
2-The steering bellcrank attached to the front axle housing is WWII MB/GPW thing. There is what looks like a bit of chopped off bracket on the front cross member that could be a later CJ steering bellcrank mount.
3-Hood could be MB or a repop. Has tpart of the MB type windshield hold down latch on the side just above and aft of the hood latch.
4-Windshield looks repop and was set up like m38 on the vent but no rifle scabbard mount bolt studs.
5-The engine head casting 638660C is a late WWII / early CJ2A head.
6-Steering wheel looks to be MB.
7-Rear axle is a 23-2 full floater and depending on ratio could be WWII 4:88 or early CJ2A 5:38
8-Glove box can be MB or an early MD Juan universal replacement repop tub.
9-The oval tag is a property tag and was very common. It would mean the jeep was at some point in it’s history the property of DC.
10-The tranny cross member do handily crafted by Bubba shows a lot of drop.
11-It would help a lot if you had detailed photos of:
A-Frame cross member behind the tranny cross member.
B-Floor riser area across rear of front seats.
C-Closeup of glove box looking for screw holes for MB data plates.
D-Lower area and legs / gas tank of front seats.
E-The floor toe board gussets taken from the engine compartment side.

Dave,
When you get a chance, can you post the information on the DC property ID tag line for line...... I saw the photos you posted but the bottom of the tag is still blurred.

My '42GPW has the same Department of Vehicles and Transportation tag brazed to the block.
The DVTxxxx numbber has been used as a VIN for registration since the 1970's.
I have never been able to find the history of the DVT tags if they were property tags or registration tags. |

Sorry Joe , been busy ,I'll try to clean it up and get a better pic . I finally got it running after an electrical problem (bad condenser) The master cylinder was shot so I got a rebuild kit and all was well. Now it runs and stops , here is my new dilemma ,I cant drive with anything but front wheel drive , with the the center stick in either position and the Hi-LO stick in neutral I put the trans in gear ,let the clutch out and .... nothing. If I take the Hi-Lo out of neutral the front axle engages and the Jeep moves . Any suggestions anyone ?

You have to put the hi-lo stick in a gear for it to move. Neutral is for towing or if you have a PTO installed.
How do you know that it is only in front wheel drive? If there is a rear driveshaft, the rear axle has to be powered if the front is. If you move the 4wd-2wd stick to 2wd and put the hi-lo in either gear, does it not move? |

The center stick is the 2WD or 4WD selector. Forward = 2WD and Aft = 4WD.
The left stick is the tranny.
The right stick is the Hi-Neutral-Lo selector. Forward=Lo and Aft = Hi.
Center stick forward and right stick aft = 2WD rear axle will turn.
(Note: right stick is restricted from moving to forward position (LO) when center stick is in the forward (2WD) position.
Center stick aft (4WD) position and right stick aft (HI) position = 4WD HI
Center stick aft (4WD) position and right stick forward (LO) position - 4WD LO
Right stick in middle (Neutral) position always = no axle movement. _________________ Wes K
