If, and I'm not in a financial position right now to do it, but if I eventually want to install a PTO winch on My stock M38A1, what are the cons? I've heard it's big and heavy, slows the speed and performance of the vehicle down, and is essentially overkill.

The jeep can handle the weight of the winch.

The real question is what do you want a winch for.

1-You have an M38A1 that was one of the original 2% that left Willys with a winch and you want to have an accurate resto?

2-You intend to do serious off roading?

3-You intend to enter tractor pulls?

4-You are one of those guys who firmly believes that he who dies with the most high dollar toys wins?

5-You stumbled over it and couldn't think of anything else to do with it but mount it on your jeep!

No to 2, 3, and 4. 1, maybe, I don't know. It's my only vehicle, I don't have a wife or kid that I have to spend money on, and I thought it might be a nice addition. Again, I can't do it now, but considering I've ended up going all out with replacing everything, I might want a PTO on there.

Putting a pto winch on your jeep will not effect the performance at all. They really are not all that heavy.

and unlike Wes' post I dont have one for any of those reasons. I have it because I stumbled on it for a really good price and said why not. But I do use my jeep off road but have never needed a winch. Not to mention that a winch on the front of the m38 really looks nice ramsey 50 or otherwise. The only bad thing is you loose the natural seat the the front bumper gives you.
