Want to buy a 12v coil for the M38A1 waterproof distributor. Not looking for aftermarket- needs to be NOS or take-off.

Cash or trade (Trading material is a YS 950 carb rebuilt and ready to go, looks great.)

Thanks.

John

Guess I should ask the experts here: does the 12v coil exist? Wait, I'd better be more specific: ....and that fits the A1 waterproof dist?

The PO put a 12v system in but kept the original waterproof distributor. The coil in there is probably an aftermarket item. I'm assuming it's 12volt. I can post pix of it.

John has them listed on his website:

http://www.midwestmilitary.net/m38p3.html

Second item down. No price though; maybe you can call him? You could try the folks at vintage powerwagons too:

http://www.vintagepowerwagons.com/

There's also a vendor selling them on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JEEP-WILLYS-REO-M602-IGNITION-COIL-12-VOLT-/130135678525?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item1e4cb0de3d

Price seems reasonable, but there's $20 shipping to add on......

Wbr,
Owen.

I sent an email to MWM; the coil listed there on his site is for an M38; anybody know if they are interchangeable with the A1?

The other reference was for an outfit in Turkey. The coil pictured looks accurate, but....

You must not have asked John about the coil's use on the A1/ They are both the same and John would have told you so. Try Rapco and Memphis Equipment as well. There were US made 12 volt coils. They just are not as plentiful as the 24 volt unit but you'll have pay the price if you find them.

Since you are already not stock I would just run the external standard 12 volt civvy coil and adapt it to the sealed distributor. That's been done for many years.

Wes, the email would have arrived after his biz hours (he's 2 hours ahead of me).

I've heard rumors of the adaption of the sealed waterproof unit to an external coil. If I saw a diagram of it, maybe I'd be interested, but if I change that much of the secondary ignition system, maybe it'd be better going to a civvy dist. The jeep isn't going to any shows, except as a spectator.

I had asked John B several months back if he had any of the 12v coils and he didn't. But he goes to shows and picks up stuff all the time, so maybe he found some. I'll talk with him tomorrow and if he has any, see what the damages would be Rolling Eyes

I tried probably 8-10 vendors today; felt like a real fishing expedition. I'll call Rapco and Memphis Eq as well.

Wes, were all the US made 12v coils either Autolite or Prestolite or ? and stamped as such? The coil in the dist now has no id on it except for a tag that has been mostly torn off. The font on it looks suspiciously foreign (far east). The only thing remaining on the tag are some part numbers.

The off shore coils are made in the Balkans or Turkey. Can't remember. They work. Just their fail rate is a bit higher than Auto-Lite/Prestolite. Yes the US coils came from Auto-Lite until about 1962 then Prestolite took over the gen/alt/starter/distrib part of Auto-Lite and Ford bought out the spark plug division.

Getting the civvy high tension coil lead inside the military distributor is simple. The two bolt holes for mounting the civvy coil are still in the block right aft of the distributor.

Interesting that the ebay link provided by another poster took me to a vendor from Turkey selling both 12v and 24v coils.

Here's what the search has turned up so for:

MWM has the coils; $150 each. This obviously relfects scarcity. I requested confirmation that it's NOS

Another outfit has them for $36; origin is Crown Automotive. They feel confident enough in them to put them in restorations.

Then there's the Turk source for not much different than the above in price.

Since the jeep is stock except for the 12v conversion, I am loosely on the lookout for a complete 24v system to put back in. "Loosely" means keeping an eye out for someone locally parting an A1 out and willing to let go the whole system for not too much and no shipping involved. I can wait; in the meantime, I want a reliable system but am cautious about putting lots of $ into a system I'll swap out in the future. A $150 coil may not be appropriate.

Out of curiousity, Wes, just how is the wire from an exernal coil routed into the waterproof dist?

FWIW, I'm trying hard to avoid the Chinese made stuff. Can't stand their design and engineering.
