Took a look at the M38A1 survey and have several questions. This is my first Mil vech so I'm still learning.

What is a "wheelhouse tag"?
How do I identify "posi-traction axles"?
What does "ventilating windshield glass" look like?
What is the difference between heaters: hot water type, gas fired type or civilian add-on type.
What do open or closed spring shackles look like?
I'm assuming there are more than one radiator support types. What are they?
What do the different fender styles look like?

I'd like to fill out the survey, but those questions have stumped me. You may want to "dumb it down" for those of us who are new to the M38A1.

Or at least provide pictures.

And speak reallllly slow. Laughing

Phil

The survey you're using must be an older survey. I have a photo gallery to support each survey.

The wheel house tag is the Willys Patent plate on the front end of the right rear wheel house behind the pass seat. It has the body's serial number on it which matches the dash serial tags number.

Posi axles were installed in late 1960's production USMC contracts and will have an extra tag bolted to the pumpkin cover warning to use special gear oil.

The ventilating windshield has it's entire glass section hinged at the top and tilts out at the bottom.

There are two miltary heater kits. One is hot water and uses the plenum access in the right side of the firewall and the other is a gas fired heater which also uses the plemnum access on the right side of the firewall. Most add on civvy heaters have the fan, core and plenum as one unit mounted inside the jeep.

"C" type shackles are open on one side and "H" type shackles close the open side of the "C".

Early thru 1953 grills hinged at the frame rail and the radiator and is suppored by two bent metal rods the connect the bottom of the radiator to the front engine mount pads. Later A1's have two rods running from the top of the grill to the firewall and the grill is no longer hinged at the frame.

Those are the older versions.

I am working on adding the photos from Wes's photo gallery.

It all takes time, but I thought these are a good start to get everyone thinking.

If you have any further problems or questions, don't hesitate to ask here! Cool
