Can someone post pics of the emergency brake setup on an M38 and an M38-A1? Are they different or the same? My M38 has an odd setup. There is no backing plate on the transfer and the drum doesnt look like the ones in the TM's. It is solid and small. There is no brakes on it just the odd hub. I would like to look at some the way they are supposed to be if I could. |

Mine is different. Someone has replaced it with another unit. Did any of these units use an external type brake? The hub I have is smaller and looks like maybe a band or something went around it. (gone now) |

Ryan, sounds like you may have an M38A1 parking brake, it used external shoes, the M38 used internal shoes. I don't have a good photo here at work to post, but the A1 used a sold drum. _________________ Chuck W.

That would explain the other parking brake handle bolted to the toolbox. I may acually have an A1 transfer case on it as well. Did the A1 have the vent cap with a line on it or a regular vented cap. Mine has the regular vented cap but is od green so Im pretty sure It came from a miliary jeep or that someone replaced the vent cap with the one I currently have. |

Sounds like A1 stuff, the A1's didn't have all the vent lines - no problem, it's really the same transfer case. I prefer the internal shoe brake, myself. The external brake is difficult to adjust correctly and rattles really bad. The internal brake was used on a lot of the civilian jeeps including the trucks and wagons, so you should be able to find everything except an orignal cable. Check the M38 forum on the G503 for some good info on parking brake cables.
I may have an extra internal brake setup, will have to check my junk stash. _________________ Chuck W.
