I have a couple of simple engine rebuild questions.

Water pump: The longer bolt, lower near the inlet, will not clear the pulley when loosened; the ½” hex head is slightly behind the pulley. The pump is out & I know I can remove the pulley to clear the bolt, but this doesn’t make sense to me. The engine manual makes no mention of a captive bolt. Arsenal rebuilt engine (1957), no bubba modifications. What am I not seeing?

Oil filler/dipstick tube: Once the clip is off, what holds it in the block-press fit? I don’t want to break it; what is the proper removal/install method? The tube is neatly indented behind the generator, I presume for generator clearance; is this correct?

The bolt will come omnut with the stock (stamped) pulley - mine came right out after I had it off the engine.

My dipstick tube just had a little silicone around it and a press fit. Correct - generator clearance.

There is a clamp that fastens to the bottom of the oil filter bracket on the dipstick tube.

Here's an M38A1
