I would assume you have a Dana 44? But you never know?

I have a rear axle off of my M38A1 that I am not using. I have never pulled it apart but it may still be in decent shape. Could get around to taking a look at it within a couple of days if you are interested.

Yup, that's correct. It's sort of on page 105 of TM 9-2320. I say "sort of" because the part numbers are there but not the number of teeth. They are the same part numbers as in the M38 parts manual, where it states 43-8T, 5.38 ratio. (Every time I look for something in the M38A1 parts manual, I thank heaven I have an M38.)

I pulled the cover off of the axle and it is stamped with 43 teeth on the ring and 8 on the pinion. The math says 5.375 but 5.38 should be the correct ratio.

You bet. The ring looked appeared to have no rust on it but couldn't see the pinion. It has been sitting around for a while and can keep doing that for a few more years. No hurries.

The better manual for M38A1 parts is the ORD 9 SNL G-758. If you don't have one then just download it in PDF format for free right here on this web site's downloads page.

If you look at page 228 about right in the middle you'll see:

2520-737-2679, G740-7372679, SP#18599-7X, WO# 802557

Differential, assy, (43-8T, 5.38 ratio)

If you look at TM 9-8014 pages 245/Par 206 (front axle) and page 259/Par 215 (rear axle) the answer is also there.

The TM 9-2320-208-20P. and TM 9-2320-208-34P are products of the 1960's and 70's when the military went to the FSN system and from that point on manufacturer's part numbers rapidly disappeared from the parts manuals and could only be found in cross reference catalogs held at the supply offices and not in the maintenance offices.
