I recently added a 1951 M38 to my motorpool that needs a new engine. Does any one have one they would like to sell (close to Wichita, KS)? Thanks, Kendall
I have a CJ3A 4cyl engine block. They are extremely similar to the M38 except for a few more water jacket plugs.
Bare block, cylinders need to be rebored or sleeved.
No visible cracks so you would need to have a machine shop check it out. _________________ Ryan Miller

Kendall,
M38 engines can be difficult to find. Then sometimes they start falling out of trees.
The only way to tell a CJ3A block (641087 casting, early or late) from a M38 block (641087 casting, early or late) is by the serial number on the small flat above the water pump. The differences are in the accessories. I can take a 1951 CJ3A short block (serial numbers shaved off) and install all the M38 engine accessories and cylinder head and voila I have a M38 engine.
If the block deck gets machined during an overhaul and the shop fails to restamp the serial number then you have a block that cannot be proven for which jeep Willys built it. _________________ Wes K

I have a number of original M38 engines. All cores needing rebuilding. I can offer a 12/12 warranty on my rebuilt motors. www.midwestmil.com

Now see what I mean. There they are falling off of John's trees over in Prior Lake MN.
Kendall,
John's a straight arrow and fair dealer so if you're thinking a commercially rebuilt unit with good service and backing then one of John's engines is an excellant way to go. _________________ Wes K
