Recently acquired a 63 m38a1 has f-head all 24 volt system in it..What I would like to know is .. What is the difference in the engines campaired to the early models other than the dipstick .. it has a dipstick like a automobile where as my older models 51,52,53,54,55 m38a1s have a tube with a dipstick... I didnt want to tear the 63 down and wnd up buying other parts for a totaly different f-head engine.. and where can I get info on this perticular model .. Thanks Guys...

What is the serial number on the pad above above the water pump?

WES... NO SERIAL ## above the water pump took asandpaper and carb cleaner ..smooth as a babys bottom...the only numbers on the engine are as follows passenger side block..648228-Lw18a NJ-OR-N2 now on the drivers side between the oil pump and rear of engine 13 thats it.. One other thing I did notice this am is it haws a FLAT FACED 24 volt starter on it.. ( Dont TEll RYAN )Wes dont spend to much tiome on this I know there are others out there with bigger problems than this.. This project wont start until July or August. just wanted to start with the big parts if needed..

806279 is the correct casting number for the M38A1. Based on your description you have an early utility, wagon or jeepster F134 which used the 124 tooth flywheel and flat nosed starter from 1948 to 1950 along with the early bellhousing. You can make your engine look similar to a real M38A1 engine but it will always be detectable as a very early F134.Can you email me some good digital photos of the engine from all sides close up?
