It started out as a parts chassis but it's turned into another project.

Yesterday I went back for the complete body for the '54 M38A1 rolling chassis I bought last week.

So, I'm beginning my search for 24V generator, reg and starter.

I know those parts were used on other mil. vehicles besides M38A1.

Anyone know which ones? I know where there are some 6 wheel mil trucks (model?) and spare parts from that era. Hoping I might find something there.

This is a long term project, so I'm not in a big hurry. Besides, I enjoy the search!

Just about any 24 volt MV built from 1949 through 1964 came with the same 24V 25A equipment. Most surplus yards have much newer equipment laying around built from 1968 and on. This is not a problem because they were still 24 volt but most had upgraded to the 24V 60A alternator by then which is a much more reliable unit with built in regulator and 35 more amps. It even bolts in the same bracket and is roughly the same size as the 25A generator. The gauges and horns will also work but most will have the later rubber Packard connectors and again these are simple to adapt to the early Douglas metal connector harness. So if you are not a stickler for accurate detail there's a ton of very usefull stuff out there and it's usually cheaper than the early stuff. Even the modern push botton main light switch is a simple bolt in replacement for the old three lever units.

Thanks for the good replies!

Rick - the vehicles are over in eastern Idaho. I'll be checking the next time I go over there. But, we're planning to go to the IMVPA Memorial Day event at Hillcrest Cem. on Monday, so I'll check w/ Alex when I see him there.

Wes - thanks for the good info, I've printed it for the file.

Jack

If you are looking for a quick solution, I have 3 Prestolite 28V 25A generators. They are the same style and type generator as the Autolite, just a bit later (I think the ones I have are '60s). I had one on my M38 until I dismantled it (I plan on keeping this one). I have no way of checking if the other 2 gens are in working order. I also have 2 25A 28V voltage regulators. Info listed below in case you want to do research.

Generators:
Prestolite
Rating 25A, Class B, Grade 1, Group a, Speed Range 1750-8000
Spec. No. MIL-G-12604C
ORDN. No. 10950808
MFR's No. GHA-4804CUT
Serial No. 8Y009863
Note: this one has a small pulley on it (you would need to find a larger one I think). It looks good and feels smooth.

The other gen. is the same except:
ORDN. No. 10950808-11
MFR's No. GHA-4804JUT
Serial No. 5B001948
This one has the correct size pulley. I think the bearings are shot on this one, so I can swap pulleys if you are interested.

Regulators:
One is made by VAP Air Division
MFR. Part No. 26640473-03
Serial No. 345970
Mil Part No. 11631857
Fed. STK. No. 2920-800-7218
No idea if this one works, but it has a test stamp on the bottom.

The other is D.C. Electronics, Inc. (I had this one in my M38 and know it works fine)
MFR. Part No. 26640473-04
Serial No. 29996
Mil Part No. 11631857
Fed. STK. No. 2920-00-800-7218

I don't think the generator/regulator would be historically correct, but would work just fine. The only difference between the Prestolite and Autolite gens is the name (as far as I know). I can post pictures if you would like, but I am on slow dial-up internet so it might be a while Rolling Eyes .

Thanks for taking the time to post all those specifics RCFlyguy!

I'm going to check local sources first but will keep your offer in mind.

You can make a quick check of the generators by motoring them over just like any electric motor.
