My overdrive is stuck in permanently on. I thought, if you shift forward, you hit neutral. Further forward, you hit overdrive. I have it all the way back, but I can cruise easily at 60 miles an hour, so the overdrive must be engaged. I could never do that before. I have tried pushing it forward, which is neutral, and it's fine there. I push it even further forward, and it stays there until I let up the clutch, at which point it pops back into neutral. Does anyone know anything about overdrives, and have some advice?

The answer Herm gave you in the your first post on this topic is still the answer you need to followup on.

I talked to "Herm the overdrive guy" today. He says it is most likely a sticking synchro. The overdrive/rebuilt engine/transmission/transfer case setup doesn't have that many miles on it. He says it may loosen up and wear in in time, or I might need to pull it and have it gone through.

I talked to herm again today, and he seemed very unsure. He was going to call Novak and call me back. I'm not that familiar with overdrives, but it is definitely engaged, but the shift lever seems to indicate it's in direct.

What synchro is he referring to here? The tranny 2nd/3rd synchro can blow out completely and have no effect on the Overdrive shifting.

Like I said, I have no experience with overdrives. I would guess he is talking about the internals of the overdrive unit, but I have no idea.

Does the OD shift stalk have ample engaging clearance from your dash to allow full forward travel?

One would require to bend stalk aft (for certain appl.) to allow clearance.
I had to do this with an unmodified M170 set up.

i don't know, I can check. When I push it all the way forward, it is right up against the dash. One big concern, though, is doesn't pushing it forward engage the overdrive? Mine is already engaged. It's all the way back. Middle is neutral, and forward is what it pops out of

Yes that is correct, forward is overdrive.

Did you install the unit and linkage or your mechanic?

Talk to Herm. I suggest you send him pics of your linkage install with shift rail positions in relation to your stalk position. I'm not qualified to speculate any further. Cool

I think it depends on if the plunger on the OD unit is in front or in the rear, that makes the difference if you push forward to engage it or pull backward to engage it.
