Both filters are partial flow filters. Not the greatest system but at least it's a filter.
The military junior cannister type filter has a pleated paper element that collects the trash and stores it in the pleats. You don't clean it. You throw it away and install a new element. This element should be changed at each oil change which is suppose to be 2000 miles.
The Cuno is a blade type strainer. Think of it as interlocking your fingers. The "T" handle is connected to a shaft which has many moving blades on it. You are suppose to simply rotate the "T" handle 360 degrees once a day. This turns all the movable blades thru all the fixed blades and scrapes them clean dumping the trash in the bottom of the bowl which is lower that the oil out port. At 6000 miles or every third oil change you drain the sediment bowl, disasemble filter, clean and reasemble.
