My M-38 will start fine, rev up fine but once put into gear it accelerates with a knocking sound and accelerates sluggishly. If I don't throttle too hard I can accelerate, be it slowly with no knocking sounds .....
This problem occurred quite fast and out of the blue
Any thoughts out there??

Try to be more specific in the knocking sound description. IE Rod knock, piston slap, spark knock etc. And try to indicate from about what location the knock seems to come from.

Are you referring to blue smoke? Cause if it it is then you will be tearing the old girl down. If it's white smoke you should be noticing your antifreeze dropping in the radiator. But if it's brown or black smoke, look for fuel issues or a bad spark plug .
I hope this helps, if you are needing engine parts there is a guy in Brandon MB on kijjiji that has a bunch of 134 engine parts for sale.

Are you in Winnipeg or the surrounding area, I live near Russell MB, maybe we will see each other at a car show sometime.
