OIL BATH AIR CLEANER

I WAS READING THE ARTICLE IN DOWNLOADS ON OIL BATH AIR CLEANERS. WHAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION WAS THE PROPER WIEGHT OF OIL TO USE. IN TM9-8014 IT SEEMS TO BE THE SAME AS THE CRANKCASE GRADE 10W-30 FOR THE F134 ENGINE. I'M WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY MORE INFO ON WHAT GRADE OIL IS BEST FOR THIS APPLICATION.

If you look closely at the lube chart it says to see Note1. Note 1 says use the same grade oil used in the crankcase (engine). It then shows the acceptable grades of OE in the key on page 62 as either 30 weight above 32 deg's. 10 weight +40 Deg's to -10 Deg's and OES weight for 0 Deg's to -65 Deg's.

The industry rule of thumb has been when no specific grade is listed in the manual for that jeep's air cleaner or on the body of the air cleaner then you use the same grade of oil you are using in the engine. This was really just an attempt to keep the lube charts brief and adequate. If you use 10-30 in your engine then by all means use 10-30 in your filter.

One word of caution: if you find oil film in the air crossover tube switch to a heavier grade oil in the air cleaner.
