with a reproduction of the military frame mount up front. I have a straight driveshaft for the PTO, and needed to ad a new u joint in the middle to give it enough bend to clear the bellcrank. I figured I should have a hanger bearing to hold the driveshaft in place, and Joe Hall from Vintage Wiring of Maine had one. It arrived yesterday, and I'm now wondering how it hooks up to the driveshaft? The coupler joints on the PTO and winch end are keyed, and the driveshaft lock in them. The hanger has a short driveshaft already in it, and it has depressions for keys on that short driveshaft, not external keys? How was this mounted? Anyone know? This is the new ujoint I acquired, and the hanger.

I looked at that in the downloads before I posted Wes! I am still unclear on a few things. Namely, do I need two joints for either side of the hanger? I only see one side clearly. The other, is that the little driveshaft in the hanger has recessed groves for keys, and the joints I have also have recessed grooves for driveshaft keys. How do they match up? It looks like I need external "key" pieces, do I fabricate those?

Look at page 350 Fig 20-4 in your M38A1 parts manual.

You need items:

AC - Joint 7994197
W - Key 7411690 2 ea
WW - Joint 7994196
AB - Seal 7411687

If the U joint you have doesn't have key slots you have the wrong U joint.

I looked in my parts manual and I see the parts. I didn't realize the part manual had details on a winch, I thought they were pretty rare. The joint I bought has a key-way and a set screw. I bought another. I see according to the parts list I need 4 total. I'll fabricate a hanger extension, and get the whole thing set up.
