PostPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2014 1:21 pm    Post subject: Bell crank assembly Reply with quote

I am rebuilding the steering on my 1950 M38 (see my project page).

I have removed the tie rods and bell crank, and am in the process of cleaning up what I will reuse and replace what is gone or fried.

I have a bell crank rebuild kit I got from Midwest Military. There are a couple more items in it than I removed, which does not surprise me. I used the search function here, as well as searched on line for an assembly diagram of the bell crank assembly. TM9-8012 has a description of installing the bell crank assembly as a whole, but not how to put the assembly itself together.

Can someone help?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
First;
See photo gallery page 1, my album "sinrisnekaf" with bellcrank pictures.
Second;
Do you received the rubber Insulators for the generator?
Chris

Xamon,
Thanks, that is exactly what I needed! Thought I'd looked at all of the manuals. Looks like I am missing 7375177 spring, and 7375180 seal.
Need to go recheck all of my bags.

Chrisk. Rubber insulators?
Thanks for the photos!

Brian

Crisk,
No problem. I thought I saw some of those generator bushings on Ebay yesterday.

Thanks for posting the photos. It helps a lot.
Take care,
Brian

Working my way back up the hill.

Pulled the drag link. Looks like the steering gear box is next. About 1/2" of play side to side of the shaft at the ball end. I don't think there is supposed to be any.

I don't think you will find a seal. There was a discussion on this forum a while back about the seal, and IIRC no one had a replacement for it. I wound up using a short (very short!) section of radiator hose on mine.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply.

I talked with John at Midwest yesterday about the seal. He said there was no replacement available. I did some digging and found the original. It has a couple of nicks in it, but isn't brittle. Probably all of the grease and oil helped.
I'll Armorall the thing and reinstall it.

Take care,
Brian

Wow, that's quite a trail.

However did you get onto it?

Brian,

Just google the NSN or ORD # and then click on those web sites that offer NSN listings. The NSN if one is listed in your ORD 9 is the the one that gets the fastest results. "parttarget.com is one.

Here's the 1st page of google results when I googled 5330-00-737-5180.
The URL's I made Bold/Underlined will usually offer the data you saw on Warren's sheets.

Hi Wes,

I emailed the supplier listed on his post, and received a reply asking for my business name and address.

We'll see where that goes.

I will buy two seals and springs if I can get them, so if someone else is looking I may have an extra set.

Thanks,
Brian
