I am in the middle of trying to remove the engine from my M38A1. I know the manual describes powerplant removal, but I would like to remove just the engine.
I have removed the starter and the bolts between the engine and the bell housing. I have also removed the radiator and has removed the nuts from the engine mounts.
With an engine hoist supporting the engine I can get about 1/2-3/4 inch gap between the engine and bell housing. Should I be able to separate the engine from the transmission continuing what I am doing, or am I missing something? I have not completely removed the two dowel bolts (they have been driven about 1 inch forward). They seem to be tight in the engine flanges, because the threaded portions have been moving through the bell housing.
Thanks for your help,
Kendall

Have you jacked the tranny a bit to keep the centerline from fan to transfer straight as you pry the engine forward?
